Working with The President’s Trust Malta and Marks and Spencer to deliver the Get Into employability programme

Reducing skills-mismatch in young people through working with local stakeholders to develop and deliver the employer-led Get Into programme in Malta.

Unemployment rates in Malta are generally comparable to the UK at around 5.7% however due to the limitation of the current system, most jobseekers are not currently exposed to the necessary education and training programmes in order to make them compatible with current vacancies. In turn, this adds the propensity of jobseekers to become long-term unemployed. Malta has a relatively high share of long-term unemployed as a ratio of the total unemployed of 45%. Malta ranks third from bottom in the EU in terms of the difficulties employers report in recruiting people to vacancies suggesting a significant mismatch in education and training and employer needs.

Responding to youth needs in Malta, the President of Malta, Her Excellency Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, recently founded The President’s Trust, which aims to support disadvantaged children and young people in Malta. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in May 2015 between The President’s Trust and Prince’s Trust International, creating a framework to exchange good practice and explore how Prince’s Trust programmes could be adapted to help young people in Malta.

The Prince’s Trust International project team is currently offering support to The President’s Trust in relation to capacity building and developing a programme portfolio. The team is also working with Marks & Spencer and its franchise partner Supermarkets 1960 to expand on the already successful relationship in the UK whereby they support 1,500 young people through employability programmes under the ‘Make Your Mark’ name. Working with The President’s Trust Malta, the Employment and Training Corporation and Marks & Spencer, Prince’s Trust International is supporting with the delivery of a Get Into Retail programme in November 2015, including:

  • supporting the capacity building of local organisations
  • fostering links between local organisations and employers
  • offering advice, support and training in relation to the programme framework
  • sharing expertise in terms of recruiting and working with disadvantaged young people
